Apostille in Canada

On May 12, 2023, the Government of Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention to give Canadians a cost-effective, streamlined method for getting their Canadian public documents accepted abroad.

When the Apostille Convention came into effect in Canada on January 11, 2024, authenticated documents will include a standard certificate called an Apostille. The apostille eliminates steps required to get documents accepted in countries where the convention is in effect, including the legalization by a consular office of the country of destination. This will simplify the acceptance of Canadian public documents in the more than 120 countries that have signed the convention.

As of January 11, 2024, Global Affairs Canada and some other agencies are responsible for issuing apostilles for documents issued by the Government of Canada and for documents issued or notarized in specific provinces and territories.

Where you send your documents will depend on where it was issued or notarized. Competent authorities in some provinces issue apostilles, and Global Affairs Canada issues apostilles for documents issued by the Government of Canada and for documents issued or notarized in specific provinces and territories.

Joining the Convention means that Canadian citizens and businesses will be able to submit Canadian public documents, such as birth and marriage certificates and education, letters from Canadian Pension Plan, police records power of attorney and more, for ‘Apostille’ to be valid abroad.

Being Nicaragua part of the Hauge Convention for Public documents since May 14th 2013, means that as for now any Canadian how needs to submit documents in Nicaragua will be accepted with Apostille. The Consular legalization wouldn’t necessary and accepted.

Definitely that will help to make valid in a smooth way Canadian documents in Nicaragua, specially nowadays when more and more Canadians are moving into Nicaragua.
